Membership and belonging
Being an Anglican church we don’t have an “official” register of membership; instead we look at the “marks” of membership – what we call the “3T’s”. If you give your Time, Talents and Tithe to the extension of God’s kingdom through St Giles, then you’re a member.
Time : we look for people to plan to attend each Sunday and also be a part of a mid week group. Mid week groups are the primary place of belonging where you get to know people and are really known. Having said that we recognise that for some work or family commitments may make this difficult for a season and this should not preclude them from membership.
Talents : God gives to all his children gifts and talents. These are given to be used in Sunday worship, as well as in other areas of the life of the church. If they are not being used, the body suffers. What do you go for a kingdom living? There is no such thing as unemployment in the kingdom of God!
Tithe : Christians are called upon to give financially as an expression of gratitude to God for all that he has done for us. We look to all members to be involved in regular, committed giving to the church.
We also see membership as functional, not positional. Being part of the family is all about getting involved. It takes lots of people to make church happen and there is something for everyone to do!
NB membership of the electoral roll is a legal mechanism to do with voting at meetings, standing for legal office and determination of the financial contribution of a church to the diocese. As such it has little to do with membership of the local church. Having said that, we would encourage all members to be on the electoral roll.
